Motueka Maternity Unit | Te Whare Whānau

About

We are a welcoming, community-based, family-friendly birthing and postbirth care facility, providing a calm, home-like environment where birth can unfold naturally with the support of your LMC midwife. The unit is a trusted part of the community, offering personalised, holistic care that prioritises your well-being. Our experienced midwives are passionate about supporting natural birth and empowering prents with confidence and knowledge.

  • Research shows that birthing in a Primary Maternity Unit increases the likelihood of a normal vaginal birth with fewer medical interventions. We can help you find an LMC midwife to support you to birth at Motueka.
  • Whether you’ve had a vaginal birth or a caesarean section, we offer a calm, supportive environment for your postnatal recovery. If you’ve birthed at Nelson Hospital, you can transfer to the unit for postnatal care.
  •  We have a dedicated birth room with a birthing pool for low-risk labours and birth, and three postnatal rooms with double beds where families can rest and recover after birth.
  • With no unnecessary separation, we support immediate bonding, breastfeeding and early parenting confidence, and we offer feeding plans tailored to your family's needs.
  • Motueka is a 30-minute drive from Richmond and 45 minutes from Nelson Hospital, the perfect place to relax and take the time to bond with your new baby.
  • We encourage whānau connection. The support person you choose to stay with you has their meals provided and our double beds ensure your partner is comfortable. Extended family are welcome to visit at a time that works for you.
